Which three words best describe SELEX S&AS UK?   Innovative, adaptable, advanced

"As part of my degree, I have to do a six-month placement at an engineering company.  I was sponsored by SELEX S&AS UK during university and wanted to do my placement with them.

I've mainly been designing test equipment and fixtures, which involves mechanical computer aided design. I've also had a lot of hands-on work including building and stripping parts for testing. It's been great getting my hands dirty and putting things I've designed to use, while the relaxed atmosphere and flexible working environment have also been enjoyable.

I'm now considering applying to SELEX S&AS UK as I would definitely like to work in engineering, particularly in a role that would allow me to use both the mechanical and electrical sides of my degree."

Which three words best describe SELEX S&AS UK?   Innovative, dynamic, challenging

"I liked the idea of gaining real-life work experience as part of my degree, since this would provide superb longer-term development and employment opportunities.

I'd spoken to previous SELEX Sensors & Airborne Systems (S&AS) UK placement students, so I was aware that the company recognised the value of placements, both to their business and to the individual. I also knew that their placement students are given a wide and diverse range of work, and entrusted with responsibilities just like any other employee, which really appealed to me.

As part of the HR Team, I'm predominantly responsible for maintaining the HR Intranet and providing regular and ad-hoc reports to the HR team. However, my role also involves supporting the HR team on a number of different projects.

During my year here, I've attended HR Improvement Team meetings on behalf of my manager, taken minutes in meetings, and reviewed and updated policies. I've also supported the Resourcing Manager and Young Talent Co-ordinator with graduate and industrial placement recruitment, and helped with Education Liaison events including mock interviews. The variety of work and the responsibility I've been given have been really enjoyable and being part of a strategic HR team has given me a great insight into what drives the company.

I've always felt like a fully integrated member of the team, which has aided my personal and professional development and will stand me in good stead in the future. It's also been a bonus to support colleagues and customers, internally and externally, during such a busy and challenging time.

I hope to put the skills I have learnt this year into practice in my final year at university, and get at least a 2:1. As for the future, I'm considering careers in HR and Forensic Psychology and would love to come back and work for SELEX S&AS UK as they offer everything I'd look for from an employer. By this I mean financial rewards, opportunities to progress and become Chartered, not to mention an exciting, fast-paced environment."

Placement:  Communications

Which three words best describe SELEX S&AS UK?    Bold, new, exciting

"I've always wanted to go into communications but I wasn't sure which area, so I chose to study a degree that would allow me to keep my options open. After careful consideration, I decided I would be best suited to a career in events as it is a fast-paced environment with demanding goals and deadlines.

SELEX Sensors & Airborne Systems (S&AS) UK stood out as I wanted to work in the defence industry. I've always been fascinated with planes and even from two years of age I was able to spot a Spitfire! I knew that working in communications in the defence industry would be an exciting and challenging career.

The placement has given me the opportunity to work on a variety of events including the biggest event in the industry- the Farnborough Airshow, which I was able to experience as a frontline member of staff.  It was great to see the planes with the SELEX S&AS UK systems in place. Nothing beats seeing the end products working!

Being part of the communications team has been a great experience. Managing events can be stressful, but with a good team around you, it's also enjoyable. I'd really like to come back and work for SELEX S&AS UK."
