Drilling, Robotics and Automation

With a dedicated robotic laboratory, including two industrial robotic arms and various Software and Hardware facilities, SELEX Galileo delivers advanced motion control software, sampling and manipulation systems as well as drilling, robotics and automation.

SD2 - Drill & Sample Preparation Distribution System for the Rosetta Lander
The Rosetta Lander carries nine experiments with a total mass of 21kg. It carries a SELEX Galileo SD2-Driller to take samples of subsurface material. The Lander structure consists of a base plate, instrument platform, and a polygonal sandwich construction, all made of carbon fibre. Some sub-systems are beneath a hood covered with solar cells. An antenna transmits data from the surface to Earth via the orbiter.
ExoMars Drill & SPDS
The ExoMars mission requires the collection of subsurface samples down to a depth of 2 metres. Once collected, the sample is then distributed to a suite of scientific instruments for rover on-board analysis.
SELEX Galileo is in charge of the development, manufacturing and integration of the multi-rod drill unit system for this mission.
